Motivation Monday: Solid Advice from F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Double exclamation points are everywhere. EVERYWHERE. And they’re as grating as ever.

I read a few writers during my youth (typing that makes me feel ancient) who resolutely refused to use an exclamation point during any point of dialogue, preferring instead to let context and dialogue tags do the work.

But after a few volumes of feeling like I was missing something, reading things like:

“Absolutely not,” Ann screeched, at the top of her lungs. “No.”

I don’t think it was an issue with reading comprehension on my part. Sometimes, exclamation points are more of a necessary ornament and less of a vanity. Right?

Except on Facebook. One exclamation point per status update, max. That’s the rule.
